Broome, Western Australia

In Broome near the top of Western Australia it's a long way to anything. It's the middle of winter and the locals are complaining it is cold (11deg every night and 28-30deg every day ). Is this a time for gloating to those in Christchurch enjoying their coldest winter in years; I think so. In the town , there is the beach, a lot of red dust and a pile of tourists. Town of 15 000 saw 350 000 through their airport last year. Poor Susie is working here, raising the standards of local General Practice (as she always does) and the rest of us continue to relax. Her job comes with a car and a house so all very comfortable.
And in a small town you have to go to everything that is on. So we went to the local races. Still can't see that anything is more interesting at them than the half time entertainment enlived by small girls dancing to the local musicians.
Broome was originally a centre for pearl harvesting and a lot of Japanese divers died here before the war.
One of the famous sights in town is the oldest outdoor cinema in the world founded in 1916. The highlight of watching a film is when the evening flight from Perth comes in low over the screen drowning out everything.
